Gra veneziana
The Venetian terrazzo — also known as battuto alla veneziana — is among the most refined expressions of Italian decorative flooring. Although its roots trace back to ancient Greece, where river stones were laid and bound with lime and clay, it was in Venice that the technique achieved its highest level of development and elegance. Over the centuries, terrazzo evolved through various methods: from the Roman opus signinum using crushed pottery, to lime-based pavimenta, and later, to mosaic floors (opus tesselatum) perfected during the Christian era. In modern times, Friulian craftsmen revived the use of river pebbles for ornamental surfaces, which later spread to Venice. The 20th century introduced cement and vibration-pressing technology, leading to a kind of artisanal prefabrication that enhanced both durability and beauty. Today, Gra Veneziana reinterprets this legacy with robust, decorative surfaces that combine material richness with broad aesthetic versatility.
